Definition:
A short persuasive article requiring critical reading which is published in a newspaper, periodical, or electronic media presenting an opinion or reaction revealing bias, controversy and/or counterarguments. The author (usually the chief editor) argues either for or against an issue, attempting to persuade readers to accept his/her point of view and take action pertaining to a particular person, event, or cause.
Purposes:
- To persuade and/or influence others’ opinions
- To solicit an endorsement
- To share opinions
- To bring current issues to the reader’s attention
- To force officials to reconsider decisions and priorities
- To suggest alternatives
- To move others to action
- To entertain
Characteristics:
- Starts with a pointed introduction that piques the reader’s interest
- Is designed to move others to action
- Presents a statement about the position, argument, issue or opinion on a topic
- Includes supporting evidence for author’s stance
- Focus is on voice and style
- Hooks the reader through persuasive techniques, interesting leads, capstone conclusions
- Is coherent
- Utilizes smooth transitions to move the reader through the piece
- Often includes a rebuttal
- Appeals to both logic and emotion
